The Dog Whisperer Way to Tame your Children’s Behavior


Cesar Millan, AKA the dog whisperer, uses his skills to rehabilitate dogs by training humans. His method of training dogs follows the pattern of exercise, discipline (rules, boundaries, and limitations), and affection. Also, his philosophy requires the dog owner to maintain a calm, assertive energy when working with his dog. The energy is a natural leadership state that dogs tend to follow.

The Dog Whisperer’s philosophy of handling dogs begs the question. Does the Dog Whisperer teachings of calm, assertive energy and the pattern of exercise, discipline, and affection work on children?

I became interested in the Dog Whisperer because I owned a German shepherd that showed signs of red zone territorial aggression. I had huge problems controlling my dog on walks. After reading his books, watching his show, and applying the attitude of calm assertive energy, I made huge stride in handling my dog and she no longer displays the red zone aggression. Now, I have four dogs that I am easily able to walk together without problems. I even impress my vet with the level of control that I effortlessly maintain over my dogs.

Being a martial arts instructor, I started experimenting with the concept of calm assertive energy within my karate classes. Using calm assertive energy, I found it greatly increases your span of control – I can control a group of 18 - 24 kids effectively instead of 6 to 8 kid. It appears to almost triple your span of control.

How to use the Dog Whisperer’s advice to tame your kids
Remain positive – Maintaining a calm assertive attitude is all about keeping your mind on positive outcomes. People, children included, and naturally follow le
aders with a positive and enthusiastic mindset. To get the best out of your children, you must remain positive.

Visualize your outcome – As a parent, you must be able to see your child’s potential and positive behavior clearly in your mind. This clear image in your mind is the birth of these positive outcomes in your child. If you can see it and believe it, your world will begin to form around your vision.

Convey your message with body language – My dogs’ behavior improved dramatically when I began to convey my messages through body language instead of using commands. This is true with children too. Many times, we say “no” to our children but our body language conveys a message of “maybe”. I remember growing up my mom giving us look that would stop my brother and me in our tracks. I would call it the mom look. Without words, she could convey a stronger message with that look.

Exercise Daily
– When I was experiencing dog problems, I found that almost 80 to 90% of my dog problems were solved by walking my dogs 30 to 60 minutes per day. I believe that our children are visually stimulated through TV, computers, and video games, but lack the necessary physical activity. This lack of physical activity manifests itself into symptoms of hyperactivity or apathy. By providing at least 30 minutes per day of moderately intense exercise, many of our children’s behavioral problems will be resolved. Karate classes are a perfect structured activity for kids to release some of these nervous pent up energy and get the necessary 30 to 60 minutes of exercise.

Firm but not harsh
– Corrections need to be firm but not harsh. All children need parents to set boundaries. Many times out of frustration, we give commands in an angry or irritated state of mind. The problem with an angry or irritated state of mind is that our emotions are contagious and that our children will gain the same state of mind causing rebellion or escalating problems. With calm assertive energy, we calm state the expected behavior and the alternative, and then calmly follow through. In karate, I will calm state “When everyone is sitting and quite, we will continue…” When dealing with a child not participating in the class, I will state, “Do you wish to join the class or sit out for a minute?” When the child states “Yes”, I say very calmly, “Okay, but if you do X again then you will need to sit out.”

Give Eye Contact – Eye contact helps us connect with others. Making eye contact, every once in a while with our children, teaches discipline. The eye contact should not be excessively long. It should be about as long as it takes to recognize the person’s eye color. Do not use eye contact only when correcting poor behavior? Instead make it part of your every day interact with your child.

By maintaining a calm-assertive mindset, we can create greater harmony with our children and stabilize our family life.

Homemade Glass Cleaner

I want to get away from store bought commercial cleaners with harsh, unhealthy chemicals. Last week, I ran out of window cleaner so I’ve researched homemade solutions with more natural products.

I found the following recipe for window cleaner and mixed up a batch to test out. It worked just as good as store bought Windex, but at a fraction of the cost.

Ingredients

32 oz Spray Bottle
1/4 cup Rubbing Alcohol
1/4 cup Vinegar
1/2 tbsp Lemon Juice (Optional)
Water
2 tbsp Dish Detergent
2-3 drops food coloring (Optional)

Mix Rubbing Alcohol, Vinegar, and Lemon Juice to spray bottle. Fill bottle with water leaving at least an inch of air space at the top of the bottle. Add Dish Detergent and food coloring. Shake vigorously.

Getting your week off on the right foot

Those dreaded Monday blues. The beginning of the week is very important because it will determine that outcome for the rest the week. If we start our Monday off poorly, the rest of the week seems to file suit and spiral downward. While starting off on the right foot will make your week feel like coasting downhill.

I know, I know. Monday’s are full of challenges –fighting traffic, getting the kids ready for school, missing the freedom of your weekend, dealing with coworkers, etc., etc., etc. but don’t go crawling back into bed and hide under the covers yet. There is hope for you. There are many things that you can do in order to start your week off on the right foot.

Here’s a list of things that I do in order to get my week off right.

List of five – On Sunday night, write down a list of your five most important activities or tasks for the upcoming week. Pick the five things that will have the hugest impact on your job, family, and well being. When we focus on the important over the trivial, we tend to live the week with a higher sense of purpose and enthusiasm.

Get the blood flowing – Getting a small amount of exercise ~ five to ten minutes ~ in the morning will get your blood flowing and pump oxygen to your brain so that you are more ready for the day.

Eat a good breakfast – Eating a breakfast in the morning with the right mixture of carbohydrates and proteins will help energize your body.

Meditate – Taking a few minutes to meditate in the morning can clear your mind for the week ahead. When I used to work for a corporation my first fifteen minute break at 10:00 I would meditate for five minutes. You can do this by going out to your car and if you feel foolish remember that most people looking at you will think that you’re just sleeping.

Something exciting for Monday evening – Make an appointment for yourself to do something real exciting after work to look forward too. With this objective in mind, you will work with higher level of motivation and more energetically to get out of work on time.

Spend time with a pet – Spending time with a pet can lower your heart rate and relax your spirit for the upcoming week. I find walking my dogs puts me in a relaxed and motivated state of mind. This will not only satisfy the exercise requirements stated above, but will also provide time with my pets.

Attitude determines aptitude
– After a great weekend, sometimes our attitude on Monday’s suffers from our self defeating thoughts. Turn your self defeats in thoughts around by giving yourself a pep talk. Start by asking yourself the right questions. What am I excited about today? How can I make this a great day? What are the most important things I can do today?

Listen to something upbeat – On the drive to work is a great time to get yourself in the right state of mind. Instead of getting too invested in the traffic for the day, think of it as an opportunity to enjoy some time to yourself. Take the time to listen to your favorite upbeat music, enjoy a funny morning radio show, start your own auto university by listening to motivational audio books, or any other car activity that puts you in a positive frame of mind.

Give a friendly hello
– Give everyone you see a friendly and animated hello. Once you get to work, don’t walk around with a chip on your shoulder or with a zombie like stare. Instead, be friendly and cordial to all of your coworkers. Replay all of the positive highlights from your weekend and ask them to tell you about theirs. Friendly conversation always seems to inject your day with some positive energy.

With a little time and energy, you too can have the best week of your life.

Eight ways to expand your circle of influence

When I was growing up in my parent’s bathroom hung a framed cross stitch pattern that my mom had made with the famous saying “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Through the years, I’ve studied and stared at this quote famous quote by Reinhold Niebuhr (1892 – 1971). Hidden within this prayer lies an important secret. The secret… That we can control our destiny by focusing on our circle of influence.

In life, it is so easy to focus on our circle of concern –things that we cannot control. For example, it’s easy to blame all our problems on events and situations outside our control; our business or job problems on the economy, our financial problems on the weak financial market, and our relationship problems on our spouse.

By focusing on this circle of concern, we give away our power and joy. It is impossible to handle and grow from the situations of our lives because our circle of concern is where all our excuses reside.

Proactive people, the other hand, keep their thoughts and actions within their circle of influence or the things they can control. Instead of blaming the economy for a lack of customers in our business, a proactive person will fine tune their business to better service the customers, develop stronger relationships, and increase their marketing to find new customers. In a relationship, instead of blaming their spouse for a failing relationship, they take responsibility and find ways to improve the relationship.

The interesting thing about working on your circle influence over your circle of concern is that over time your circle of influence actually grows. The greatest people in history, for example, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Gandhi, Jesus Christ, Martin Luther King, all focused on a cause until it expanded their circle of influence creating tipping point in history.

Eight Ways to Expand Your Circle of Influence…
  1. Don’t ask why, ask how – ask yourself the right questions in order to expand your circle of influence. How can I turn this situation around? How can I improve my relationships? How can I help and inspire the people around me?
  2. Believe, Achieve, Succeed - Believe in yourself even in the face of naysayers. In order to expand your circle the influence, you’ll have to be bulletproof to criticism. Most criticism is intended to hold you back - to maintain status quo. Don’t let negative criticism influence you. Instead hold your vision strong and concentrate on the desired end result.
  3. Turn off the news - Put yourself on a news diet because most news is intended to create and stimulate fears in order to increase ratings. The daily news focuses our attention on our circle of concern or those things that are outside our control.
  4. Increase your value through education – Read and educate yourself on the areas that you want to expand. If you are experiencing financial problems, read books on financial prosperity or watch Dave Ramsey. If you want to improve your job situation, read books on your area or take classes. If you want to improve your business, get a mentor or visit a successful business owner.
  5. Fine tune your skills – In Karate, we practice a basic punch thousands of times so that in a self defense situation, it becomes almost an automatic response. In our lives, repetition is the mother of skill. Constantly work on mastering skills. For example, your marriage is something that we must constantly work on. Like a bank account, we must make positive daily deposits for a rich relationship.
  6. Turn problems into opportunities – My mother would always say “If you keep faith, things always turn out for the better.” In other words, many times problems are blessing in disguise with hidden opportunities. I talked to a student’s parent recently that was laid off from a job only to find that it made them shift into a field that was better suited for their skills and talents. They were happier now and the job paid better too. Their problem turned into supernatural opportunity.
  7. Volunteer to help – Volunteering is a great way to provide a valuable service to other people. But it is also a great way to network with like minded individuals that is ripe with opportunities. An adult student of ours that works as a computer programmer volunteered his web designing skills to create websites for some non-profit organizations. His involvement opened the doors of opportunity and he was offered a new better paying job that was closer to home. Not only did he increase his lifestyle, but now he gets to spend more time with his family. All of this in a “bad” economy!
  8. Be upbeat and enthusiastic – Upbeat and enthusiastic people attract people and situations that expand their influence. It’s natural to want to be around someone with a magnetic personality. By becoming magnetic, you will attract the opportunities like a compass pointing north.
Taking these simple steps will expand your circle of influence. You’ll start to see problems turn into an opportunities, supernatural doors will open in your life, and walls and obstacles that seemed insurmountable will crumble to your feet.
