How to throw a knife.

This is a class demonstrates how to throw knives. Learn how to throw knives and you'll impress all your friends.

You will need three things to learn how-to throw knives.
Throwing knives
A Target
Adherence to rules of safety

Warning: Knives are dangerous to throw. Throw at your own risk and they should never be thrown at others.

Types of throwing knives
Throwing knives should not be sharp on the edge. The point of the knife and the weight determines the best quality throwing knives.

The Target
For the best success start with a pizza box leaned against a chair. Once you learn proper technique, move onto plywood covered with cardboard, then finally just plywood.

The Grip
There are many different types of grips like the hammer grip and pinch grip. In this video, we use a pinch grip. Pinch the blade between your thumb and index finger. Your thumb should line up with the spine of the blade.

The Throw
With the throw, bring the blade up to the side of your head and point your elbow at the target. Unlike a baseball throw that goes across your body, the knife throw goes straight down and extends out to the target like your pointing at where you want to throw. The body rocks forward with the throw.

The Distance
The proper distance is important for a proper spin knife throw. The 7' range is a 1/2 spin to the target and the knife is gripped by the blade. At the 11' range, the knife spins one full revolution to the target and it's gripped by the handle. At the 15' range, the knife turn 1 1/2 times to the target and it's gripped by the blade.

Making adjustments
Where you stand is very important to getting the knife to stick in the target straight. Minor adjustment to your position will be necessary depending on the throw. At the line, make your first throw. If the knife over-rotates or sticks into the target with the handle tilted upwards, inch forward in your stance and throw again. If the knife under-rotates or sticks into the target with the handle tilted downwards, inch back in your stance and throw again.

Remember that consistency of the grip and throw are a necessity to hit the target accurately. Keep practicing until you become adept at hitting your target.

Thanks for watching How To Throw Knives!

Heian Shodan, Heian Nidan, Kanku Dai Bunkai - Double Blades

To Watch the video: http://youtu.be/WDL_DQH01_E

Heian Shodan, Heian Nidan, Kanku Bunkai application - Double Blades

Double Blades is an application of the four knife hand block sequence against a hook punch or sucker punch that goes to the inside of the attackers arms.

These four knife hand blocks appears in many Shotokan kata for example, Heian Shodan, Heian Nidan, Kanku Dai, and Sochin. The appearance of this sequence of moves in so many kata means that it has an important application.

Also, I talk a little about the concept of the obvious follow-up. The obvious follow-up is to strategically think about some possible reaction of the attacker and to practice follow-ups for each reaction to finish the combo.

Heian Shodan, Heian Nidan, Kanku Dai Bunkai - Double Leg Sweep from Bubi...

Bubishi: The Classic Manual of CombatTo watch the video: http://youtu.be/5hovFKPma4c

The four knife hand blocks sequence of techniques show up in many Shotokan kata for example, Heian Shodan, Heian Nidan, Kanku Dai, and Sochin. The appearance of this sequence of moves in so many kata means that it has an important application.

The Bubishi is a manual that was handed down and copied by hand from master to student. In this manual, we find 48 figures or drawings of self-defense scenarios.

This video demonstrates the bunkai found on Figure #31 of the bubishi called Going to the Fight with One Knife or more commonly known as Double Leg Sweep.

Cute Karate Kids learn a Scissor Sweep for Bully Defense

To watch the video: http://youtu.be/P5Gjs_ro-8A

This video was unintentional. We were filming that day in classes and wanted to produce a video of the older kids learning a scissor sweep for bully defense. My staff did a test taping of our Little Ninjas, 4 to 6 yrs old, learning this great bullyproof lesson. They did so great that we decided to post this video of them.

A very likely scenario in a bullying situation is a bully tackling your child to the ground to strike them. The scissor sweep is a perfect way for your child to control and stop the bully until help arrives therefore bully proofing your child. Watch the video to learn how to bully proof your child.

Karate Mat Chat "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility"

To watch the video: http://youtu.be/KTJIvmhYAzw

Here's a karate mat chat that we use to teach kid's to use their karate appropriately and to know when to not use their karate and when they can use their karate.

How many of you have watched the movie Spiderman?

In the movie, his Uncle tells him that,
"With great power comes great responsibility."

In Karate, you are gaining great power because you are learning how to kick and punch, and you can hurt someone with them so we're responsible to use it at the right time.

Can you hit people you know if they make you angry? No, Just because you're angry doesn't make you right.

How to tie a karate belt - Super Lock Style

Click here to watch the video

I am super excited about this. I discovered a Super Lock Style of tying your karate belt from Rener Gracie. For years, I was annoyed by my obi constantly becoming loose or untied making me stop to crank my knot tight only to become loose again in a few seconds of training.

The Super Lock method of belt tying starts with the regular style of tying your belt but before tightening the knot completely, you slid the tails or endings of the belt between the wrap layers of the belt. Pull it tight and you have a knot that will stay tied all night.

BTW, I think the Grace Academy YouTube site is providing some of the best Martial Arts related videos. Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/GracieAcademy

Heian Shodan Bunkai - How to Escape from a Wrist Grab

To watch video: http://youtu.be/rhIfO4lHDpY

Heian Shodan Bunkai -- Circle Hammerfist Strike -- Wrist Escape

Here's a great application for the fourth move of Heian Shodan. This bunkai uses the circle hammerfist strike as a wrist escape.

This wrist escape is a great move for woman self-defense if a stranger grabs your hand, for example, in a crowded bar or club. You can use this escape to release their grab while you disappear into the crowd or get in our self-defense stance and use assertive communication to back the attacker away or prepare to defend yourself.
