Preparing and Drying Black Walnuts

After collecting the black walnuts, there is still a few steps to prepare them for eating and extracting the nut. The first step is to remove the outer husk. Wear gloves for this step because the husk will stain your hands. Use your thumbs to press in and split the husk off of the nut. The husks are poisonous to other plants so dispose of away from your plants and do not put it into your compose.

Once the husk is removed, place them into your sink and rinse with water. Once the sink is full, start to agitate the nuts together to remove the excess husk off the shells.

The last step is the drying phase. I placed the nuts on my drying rack and let them cure for at least 2 weeks.
