Walking a Tightrope

Sometimes life can feel like we’re walking a tightrope. We’ve all felt it.

But if you ask a seasoned tightrope walker what’s the secret, they would tell you to look straight ahead at your goal, not at your feet. You never look down. Where our head goes, our body follows so if you look down that is where you will most likely go. Keep your eyes fixed on where you want to go.

This concept is the same as our thoughts. Our body and actions tend to follow our mind and thoughts. Some people are always looking down, focusing on all the bad things in their life and the past wrongs against them. Wallowing in self-pity and finding people to blame. You can never fulfill your destiny with these thoughts and this energy level. Instead we need to rise above these past tragedies and wrong doings, keep your eye fixed on who you want to become and what great things you want to achieve. The key is to keep your eye on where you are going. You need to set BIG goals for yourself and to keep those goals in the forefront of your actions so that you can fulfill your true destiny.

Zucchini and Snow Peas Stir-Fry

Our garden is producing tons of snow peas and we received the gift of zucchini from a student. Here’s a quick Zucchini and snow peas stir-fry that we made in a snap.

1 large zucchini, sliced
2 cups snow peas
1/2 cup sesame oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
3 tablespoons soy sauce
Sesame Seeds

Heat oil in pan until hot. Add garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Add zucchini and snow peas. Continue to cook until tender. Add soy sauce and sprinkle sesame seeds.

Motivation is an inside job

Yesterday, I woke up extremely unmotivated, but looking back on the day, it ended up been an extremely productive. It made me realize the motivation is an inside job. No amount of coaches, money, or bosses can motivate you 100% of the time. We need to become intrinsically motivated to more forward in our live.

So the question is how do you motivate yourself each day

There is many ways to motivate ourselves but I think there is some to Lao-tzu’s saying, “A Journey Of A Thousand Miles Begins With The First Step.” For me, starting a project is harder than completing it. Starting to write this post is twice as hard finishing it. Walking out the door to go to karate takes more discipline than taking the class. Getting in the car and driving to the gym seems tremendously difficult compared to the workout. In fact, most of the time once I get the ball rolling, I actually thoroughly enjoy the activity.

The reason the first step is the hardest is because this is when the excuses happen. I learned along time ago that we can easily justify any excuse we want for not doing the high value activities in our lives. I believe this is why so many people spin their wheels in life ~ we give in and justify our excuses instead of fighting back against them.

We deserve to live a happy and fulfilling life and many times it's that first step that's holding us back from the life we deserve.

Let's take that first step today! And live the life of our dreams.

Summertime Chicken Caesar Salad

This flavorful salad is a great summer meal and will keep your diet in check. It's obvious by the ingredients that I got this recipe off the Kraft website.


1 head romaine lettuce
2-1/2 cups cooked boneless skinless chicken breast strips
2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved
2 cups cut-up cooked asparagus (1-inch pieces)
1/2 cup KRAFT Light Golden Caesar Dressing
1 cup seasoned croutons
1/4 cup KRAFT Grated Parmesan Cheese

TOSS lettuce with chicken, tomatoes and asparagus in large bowl.
ADD dressing just before serving; mix lightly.
SPRINKLE with croutons and Parmesan cheese.

Our 5 Guiding Principles of Karate ~ Dojo Kun

Today’s topic for the Everyday Sensei is the Guiding Principle of our dojo or in Japanese, the Dojo Kun.

At the end of each class, we repeat our 5 Guiding principles of Character, Sincerity, Effort, Self Control, and Courtesy. These are 5 words are simplified English versions of the original Dojo Kun in Japanese that states the basic philosophy of karate according to our founder, Master Gichin Funakoshi.

The original Dojo Kun stated five basic tenets of karate which were
- Seek Perfection of Character
- Be faithful
- Endeavor
- Respect Others
- Refrain from Violent Behavior

So let’s talk about the meaning of each Guiding Principle

Seek Perfection of Character is the ultimate goal of karate. Gichin Funakoshi stated it this way, "The ultimate aim of the art of Karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants." All the other principles of karate are based on seeking perfection of character ~ pursuing our highest objectives. To seek perfection of character, we must work from the inside out.

This principle also implies the idea of Kaizen or Improving Constantly And Never-endingly ~ The ultimate I CAN attitude. This means our karate training, like our life, is a ongoing process of personal growth and learning ~ a process that last a lifetime. We must set goals and as soon as we accomplish the goals, we must set our sights on bigger goals. In karate, you can only failure through quitting. As long as we continue to persist, learn, and grow, we succeed.

The translation means to be faithful in everything we do. We must be true and sincere to other people and our obligations. It also means to be faithful to ourselves by doing the best in everything we do.

By being faithful to ourselves and others, we build a feeling of trust and mutual respect. Sincerity basically means dealing honestly with our people and becoming the best person we can.

We must as martial artists try hard and give our best in everything we do whether it’s training, a relationship, or work. Effort or to endeavor mean maintaining a Black Belt Attitude and give 110% effort in everything we do. Regardless of how we feel or the situations we experience, we must remain upbeat and positive and endeavor to turn every problem into an opportunity.

This is a reminder to remain calm, assertive. We must be in control of our mind, emotion, and actions at all times. We must work everyday to maintain our inner calmness and peaceful mind. Self-Control also means to take responsibility for our actions and understanding that we directly influence our life results by our actions. We also must look for peaceful resolutions and refrain from violent behavior in every situation.

Courtesy reminds us to respect others. Respecting others begins with the Golden Rule – Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. We need to learn to listen empathically and open our minds to the opinions of others. Also, treating people with respect is important because being disrespectful can create enemies. If you treat people with courtesy and respect, you will more clearly see the world and enjoy your experiences.

Honey Glazed Wings

Here's a super easy recipe for honey glazed wings. For a real special taste, we used some mesquite charcoal for the grill.

12 whole chicken wings
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp fresh ground black pepper
1/2 cup honey for brushing

Rinse and dry the wings under cold water. Place wings in large bowl and sprinkle with garlic, salt, and pepper. Turn the wings to coat with the seasonings, then cover and let marinate in the refrigerator, for 2 to 4 hours.

Heat grill to medium high. Oil the grill grate. Spread wings open and place on the grill. Cook the wings until they are no longer pink, about 12 to 16 minutes. During the last 4 minutes of grilling brush with the warm honey (warm honey for 30 seconds in microwave). Transfer to a serving platter.

The Sacred 5

Today, I want to introduce you to a very powerful tool that I call The Sacred 5. This is how I organize my day around the most important tasks and keep myself on track during the week.

The Sacred 5 is your 5 most important tasks for the day. Each task represents the most important task for one of five areas of your life ~ Relationships, Career, Self-development, Finances, and Well-Being.

The objective is to do Whatever It Takes (WIT) to complete these five tasks during the day. Here’s how I work this system. At the beginning of each week, I brainstorm a To-Do list of tasks for the week. Then, I label the tasks into categories. After I label each task in one of the five areas above, I rate them, in order of importance according to which will produce the greatest results. On Monday, I create my list of 5 for the day with activities that will produce the most dramatic results in my life.

If you follow The Sacred 5 everyday during the workweek, Monday through Friday, that’s 25 extremely important tasks per week or 100 extremely important tasks per month.

Many times you will find that the activities that you avoid, i.e. that important project at work or home, are the most important task while most of us fill our days with the simple and easy but less important tasks. We mistake activity for accomplishment.

Quick note – If you find yourself avoiding a specific task for a couple day, I find it helps to break the task into small parts.
